Amsterdam to host 10th International greenhouse gas technologies control conference in 2010
Washington, 20 November 2008 – The Netherlands will host the next International Greenhouse Gas Technologies Control Conference (GHGT) in 2010 it has been announced. Today in a video message, Jacqueline Cramer, the Dutch Minister of the Environment and Spatial Planning invites corporate companies and experts on greenhouse gas technologies to join the next bi-annual conference.
GHGT-10 will focus not only on advances in carbon capture and storage technology, but also on the policies and measures needed to facilitate wide scale implementation.
Climate change expert from Ecofys, Chris Hendriks, predicts that the 2010 conference will come at a time when carbon capture and storage is high on the political agenda. He said: “crucial decisions will have to be made about carbon capture and storage. The conference will have a significant role in helping shape global policy on this issue.”
During the closing session of the Washington conference the organization is handed over to the Netherlands’ team, supported by the IEA Greenhouse Gas R&D programme, consisting of:
• Ecofys (part of sustainable energy solutions provider Econcern)
• Energy research Centre of the Netherlands (ECN)
• Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research (TNO)
• Utrecht University
About the GHGT
The Green House Gas Technologies conference (GHGT) series has established itself as the principal international platform for exhibiting and discussing new greenhouse gas mitigation technologies. This series has become a focal point for international research on carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS).
The Washington conference (GHGT-9) is the largest held to date, attracting over 1400 delegates. The GHGT-10 anticipates that about 1800 delegates will participate in the conference taking place at the RAI in Amsterdam, from September 19 to September 23 in 2010.
About Carbon Capture and Storage
Many countries, including the Netherlands are supporting research into CCS, including pilot or demonstration projects. The EU has expressed an ambition to realise ten to twelve large CCS demonstration projects by as soon as 2015.
