04 March '10 Ecofys present at European Wind Energy Conference & Exhibition (EWEC)
From 20 to 23 April Ecofys will be present at the European Wind Energy Conference & Exhibition (EWEC) 2010 in Warsaw, Poland. We would like to invite you to our stand at the Holland Pavilion, (stand number T231), near the main entrance and the registration area.
EWEC is widely regarded as the most professional, comprehensive and informative event in the wind sector. It is the annual event which combines an exhibition of the leading players and a conference covering every key aspect of the wind market – from technical and theoretical to policy and practice. We look forward to seeing you there. Register for the exhibition and seminars.
24 February 2010 - Identification and mobilization of Solar Potentials via Local strategies (POLIS)
The European cooperation project POLIS has started. This project focuses on implementing strategic town planning and local policy measures to utilize the solar energy capability of structures in European cities.
The aim of the project, coordinated by Ecofys, is to identify and evaluate current practices in solar urban planning, and unite the key responsible parties of this process to create a more cohesive planning and legislation practice for solar developments.
Through the cooperation of several European cities that are currently engaged in solar urban planning, the mobilization of solar urban potential can be promoted at a local level. Since municipalities are the key actors in the process of urban planning and local initiatives it is important that the planning departments of towns and cities be intrinsically involved in the POLIS project.
Solar urban planning in POLIS cities
One of the primary targets of the project is to integrate solar aspects in routine urban planning and decision making from the initial stages.
Each participating city will cooperate with its partners to develop a Pilot Action at local level to demonstrate best practice. Simultaneously, foundations are created for further steps towards a long-term solar development of each participating city which are described in Solar Action Plans.

Dissemination of best practice in Europe
The POLIS project invites local authorities in different states of urban development to collaborate with each other in order to share their experiences and knowledge of solar town planning. They will also discuss strategies to encourage the progression of solar energy installations through this integrated network of cities. The current solar planning practices of several European cities are presented on the project website.
23 February 2010 - More Ambition Needed if Greenhouse Gases are to Peak in Time, Says New UNEP Report
Bali (Indonesia) – Countries will have to be far more ambitious in cutting greenhouse gas emissions if the world is to effectively curb a rise in global temperature at 2 degrees C or less. This is the conclusion of a new greenhouse gas modeling study, based on the estimates of researchers at nine leading centres, including Ecofys, compiled by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP).
The experts, including Niklas Höhne from Ecofys, suggest that annual global greenhouse gas emissions should not be larger than 40 to 48.3 Gigatonnes (Gt) of equivalent C02 in 2020 and should peak sometime between 2015 and 2021.

22 February 2010 - Footprinting soy versus animal products
Alpro is the European pioneer in the development of soya-based food and drinks. For over 25 years, Alpro has championed a healthier, more sustainable way of producing and selling delicious products that conserve the unique nutritional value of soya beans. To help them achieve their goals, Ecofys provided several carbon footprinting services, e.g. footprinting soy versus animal products. ‘Join the movement NOW’ is an Alpro campaign for reducing your carbon footprint by changing the way you eat. Ecofys is proud to contribute to this wonderful campaign. Our report, ‘Plain Calcium Soy Milk and Soy Burger Mild Carbon Footprints’ features on the website of, ‘Join the movement NOW’. The publication of our report on the website is a huge compliment to our work.

02 February 2010 - Ambition of only 2 developed countries sufficient for Copenhagen Accord meeting 2°C target
02 February 2010 - Only 2 out of 10 developed countries' reduction targets submitted to the Copenhagen Accord qualify as ‘sufficient' to keep global temperature rise below 2°C, finds the update of the 'Climate Action Tracker'. The reduction targets of all countries currently associated with the Accord lead to a striking inconsistency with the 2°C goal defined in the very same Accord. The current pledges leave the world heading for a global warming of over 3°C above pre-industrial levels by 2100.

06 January 2010 - Business Course in Sustainable Energy
Maastricht University School of Business and Economics has developed a course in cooperation with Ecofys in which professionals will be enabled to get familiar with challenges in renewable energy supplies and energy saving measures. The course directly links the knowledge of the energy and economic sector with management skills and enhancing the ability to implement sustainable solutions. Companies and authorities will experience an increasing need to consult energy professionals. This course qualifies you to be one of those professionals with good career opportunities in the energy sector. The lecture sessions will start in April 2010 but the e-learning modules can be started right away.

14 December 2009 - Copenhagen climate deal only half way to what is needed
With only five days to go before a Head of Government Agreement on climate change at Copenhagen, even the best emission reductions proposal are only half way to the limits in 2020 that would keep global average temperature rise below 2°C or 1.5°C as called for by 100 countries according to a new assessment by the “Climate Action Tracker” of Ecofys, Climate Analytics and the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK).

10 December 2009 - Copenhagen must deliver emissions cuts beyond the high-end of current proposals
Recent independent analyses of current mitigation proposals on the table in Copenhagen by Nicholas Stern, the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), Ecofys, Climate Analytics, the Sustainability Institute (C-ROADS), the European Climate Foundation and ClimateWorks (Project Catalyst), all point to the same conclusion: the negotiations must deliver the high-end of current proposals and stretch beyond them, if the world is to have a reasonable chance of containing warming to below 2°C above pre-industrial levels, or the 1.5°C goal of many developing nations.

9 December 2009 - Ecofys study dispels myth of EU's claimed climate policy leadership
A new study by the Ecofys Institute, commissioned by the Greens/EFA group and launched today in European Parliament, has revealed EU's claims to be the leader in international climate policy to be a myth. The study, which looks at both past climate policies and current pledges, serves to further underline the need for the EU to up its pledges on emissions reductions and climate financing in order to live up to its claims and goals on climate change.

03 December 2009 - Copenhagen climate deal headed for 3.5°C Global Warming
A sobering new assessment by the “Climate Action Tracker” of the emission commitments and pledges put forward by industrialized and developing countries for the Copenhagen climate negotiations shows that the world is headed for a global warming of well over 3°C by 2100.

November 2009 - Climate Action Tracker shows slight progress towards limiting rise in global temperatures to 2°C
The emission commitments made by the 22 countries and regions covered so far are not ambitious enough to limit global warming to 2°C, according to a new science-based assessment system called the “Climate Action Tracker”. Launched today by Ecofys, Climate Analytics and the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impacts Analysis, this web-based tool provides a clear picture of each country’s commitments and proposed actions as well as how these will contribute to total greenhouse gas emissions.

6 November 2009 - Benchmarking study for free emission allowances made public
In 2013, the EU will change the rules for the free distribution of allowances within the EU Emissions Trading Scheme. This week, Ecofys delivered a report to the European Commission on a new allocation methodology, which is based on benchmarking. The associated study will be an important technical input for the European Commission when it prepares a proposal for assigning free allowances for EU ETS installations. Today, Member States and stakeholders will be informed about the study by Maarten Neelis, Ecofys project manager for the study.
