Energy supply
Both developed and developing economies are facing dramatic challenges in securing a reliable, affordable and environmentally friendly supply of energy.

Traditional, fossil fuel-based systems are showing a growing number of problems. This includes soaring prices, over-reliance on a small number of global suppliers, geopolitical and technical risks that can affect supply, resource depletion and environmental damage.

This has led to the call for a more sustainable energy supply. New or improved renewable energy technologies, with less environmental impact, are gaining market share, while technological innovation is driving further efficiency gains and cost savings.  Fossil fuel technologies are also changing in response  to economic and environmental challenges, resulting in increasing efficiency of energy generation and new ways to dramatically reduce CO2 emissions (e.g. with carbon capture and storage technologies).

While new policies, renewable energy projects and improvements in technology can all help society move towards a sustainable energy supply, policy makers, companies and civil society still face considerable challenges.  Selecting suitable policies and strategies, planning effective programmes and successful implementation require an in-depth understanding of the available options, their pros and cons, potential risks and the practical steps needed to achieve short-term results while setting the stage for more ambitious longer term achievements.

Providing a sustainable energy supply for everyone is our mission. A broad customer base and involvement in both energy demand and supply have given us valuable insights into the policy, technology and economic factors that drive or hinder the development of viable, sustainable energy systems. We are therefore ideally positioned to help policy makers and private sector enterprises understand, plan and implement a successful transition towards sustainable energy supply solutions.

Our services include:

  • Developing broad sustainable energy supply strategies, that make the best use of the environmental resources available in a particular country (or a region)
  • Evaluating existing energy supply policies and designing new sustainable energy policies
  • Energy modelling, including the articulation of marginal abatement costs curves
  • Analysing alternative electricity, heat, cooling or fuel supply technologies and systems
  • Assessing the market opportunities associated with different sustainable energy solutions, given existing and foreseeable technological, market and regulatory developments
  • Articulating sustainable energy strategies, both with power producers and energy users
  • Analysing market-based instruments (such as green certificates) and other regulatory tools to identify constraints risks and opportunities for our corporate clients
  • Developing business cases and project design documents for individual energy and renewable energy projects
  • Assessing the conditions under which new technologies or fuels meet sustainability criteria.
